ShopRite: Where You Can’t Get Fish or Health Care

Let’s say you work the fish counter at ShopRite and your co-worker doesn’t show up. She has a sick kid or her tire is flat or the bus is late: whatever. And let’s say that you tell your manager you’d be happy to keep on working, you know, to get a few more hours in and maybe help pay for a new pair of galoshes.

Let’s say you can forget about those extra hours, especially if you are near the 30-hour threshold that would put you squarely into the fearsome realm of ObamaCare. You won’t get those extra hours at ShopRite West Hartford–Family Owned!–because they would have to pay for part of your health insurance.

Indeed, this is what our fishmonger at ShopRite told us as she shut the counter down. She wasn’t allowed to work any extra hours, she said, “because of ObamaCare.” What she really meant was that ShopRite, whose business philosophy states that “We are Partners in Caring for our neighbors’ families, homes and communities,” gets pretty crabby when forced to cut into its profits so its employees might get access to decent health care.

Apparently, when you are elbow-deep in the latest genetically engineered Frankenfish, that 13.6 billion dollars in retail sales your company just scored is just enough to get you . . . angry at President Obama.

Bon Appetite America!
